WENDY CREWSON

Date of Birth: May 9, 1956

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Wendy Crewson realized at any early age that she wanted to be an actor, after making appearances in school plays. She went to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, where she received her Bachelor of Arts before going to London, England, to study drama. When she returned to Canada, she landed a able role in the TV movie War Brides (1980). A role in the television series Home Fires (1980) followed, as well as a guest appearance on the long-running Canadian TV series The Littlest Hobo (1981).

She made her American debut in the TV movie Mazes and Monster (1982), starring Tom Hanks. Her feature film debut came the same year, in the forgettable Island of Blood (1982), but in 1984 she returned to TV for the movie The Guardian, starring Martin Sheen and Louis Gossett Jr. Over the next few years, she alternated between TV and film, and in the late 1980s, she made the move to the States, settling down in Berkley, California with her husband, actor Michael Murphy, whom she met in 1987 when she appeared on his short-lived TV series Hard Copy. They returned occasionally to Canada for productions, including Sleeping Dogs Lie (1998), filmed in Toronto and featuring both Crewson and her husband, as well as children, Maggie and Jack.

Her work has teamed her up with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Whoopi Goldberg, Michelle Pfeiffer, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Gere, Robert Redford, Tim Allen and Harrison Ford, in films such as To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday (1996), Air Force One (1997), Bicentennial Man (1999), What Lies Beneath (2000), The Santa Clause 2 (2002) The Clearing (2004) and Eight Below (2006).

Crewson and her husband and children moved back to Toronto when she was filming the feature Between Strangers (2002), in which she played Sophia Loren's daughter. In 2012, she played Dr. Fishman in the drama The Vow alongside Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, and the talk show host in the 2015 drama Room.

In 2009, she divorced Michael Murphy. In 2013, she won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Dramatic Program or Series for her work on Saving Hope.
