Born in Wermelskirchen, Germany, Uwe Boll became interested in filmmaking when he was 10 years old, after watching Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando. He produced a number of short films on Super 8 and video, then went on to study film directing in Munich and Vienna. He also studied literature and economics in Cologne, graduating in 1995 with a doctorate in literature.
In 1991 he wrote, directed and produced German Fried Movie, an homage to John Landis' classic Kentucky Fried Movie. After several more German language films, he wrote/produced/directed his first English-language film, Sanctimony (2000) starring Casper van Dien and Michael Paré. Next, Boll produced and directed Blackwoods (2002), starring Patrick Muldoon and again, Michael Paré. For Heart of America (2003), he used many of the same actors from his earlier films, including Muldoon, Paré and Clint Howard, as well as Jurgen Prochnow and Maria Conchita Alonso.
Boll directed and produced House of the Dead(2003), a horror story that featured Prochnow and Howard as well as a host of young newcomers. For his next film, Alone in the Dark, based on the video game, Boll worked with a brand new set of actors including Stephen Dorff, Christian Slater and Tara Reid.
