Born in Wermelskirchen, Germany, Uwe Boll became interested in filmmaking when he was 10 years old, after watching Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando. He produced a number of short films on Super 8 and video, then went on to study film directing in Munich and Vienna. He also studied literature and economics in Cologne, graduating in 1995 with a doctorate in literature.
