At 27, Ulrich Edel penned his first script, Perahim - die zweite (1974) based on a novel by C.V. Gheorghiu, the experience led him to try his hand at directing. Edel directed the miniseries Ding, Das in 1978, but it was his next project, the feature film Christiane F, that catapulted him into international attention. The film, which portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 70s, followed the actions of a 14-year-old girl who is fascinated by the sound of the disco, and as a result she gets drawn into a clique where everyone is on drugs. The film won the Most Popular Film award at the Montreal World Film Festival.
In the late 80s, Edel moved to the States where he directed Jennifer Jason Leigh in the controversial film Last Exit to Brooklyn and won numerous awards for his work on the film. His next project was directing Madonna in the thriller Body of Evidence.
The director's television credits include the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning film Rasputin, starring Alan Rickman, Ian McKellen and Greta Scacchi and Tyson, starring George C. Scott and Michael Jai White, both for HBO.
In addition, he has directed numerous episodes of the hit series Tales from the Crypt, Twin Peaks and Homicide: Life on the Street.
Edel recently completed The Little Vampire, a family film about a boy who meets a family of Vampires and tries to save them from a Vampire hunter. He also returned to the small screen with another miniseries called The Mists of Avalon, which tells the story of the women behind the Legendary King Arthur of the round table.
