Thomas McCarthy studied acting at the Yale School of Drama. He amassed an extensive list of stage credits, including Noises Off on Broadway and regional productions of Hamlet and Taming of the Shrew, as well as a production of La Ronde, directed by Joanne Woodward. He made his screen debut with a small role in the teenage drama Crossing the Bridge (1992), followed by another small role in the indie drama Rift (1995).
