TOM DEY

Date of Birth: April 14, 1965

This New England native graduated from Brown University in 1987 with a degree in religion and philosophy, only to cross the pond and study film at the Centre des Etudes Critiques in Paris. After completing two years of study, he ventured back and took residence in Los Angeles where he attended the American Film institute. During his time there he interned at American Cinematography, where he wrote several articles for the magazine. After receiving his master's degree from AFI, he made a commercial director's reel shot, which was noticed by a commercial production house who hired Dey on a directing contract. He then spent the next few years directing commercials for such clients as Mastercard, U.S. Airways, Showtime Networks, and L'Oréal.

For the start of this millennium, Dey took his first chance in the feature film industry and directed Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon (2000). The film also gave him the opportunity to film his first music video, in particular, Uncle Kracker's "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," which was on the film's soundtrack.

The film was not a colossal success, but it was enough to prove that this first-time director knew what to do behind a camera. Two years later he released Showtime, another comedy/action film. Starring Robert DeNiro, the flick lost money at the box office. It took Dey four years to return to the big screen, this time with the romantic comedy Failure to Launch (2006) starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie was a moderate success, and he next took on the family comedy Marmaduke (2010).
