While earning a B.A. in English Literature at the Northwestern University, Tim Johnson produced two animated films, both of which earned Richter Grant Organization Awards. After graduating, he worked as a freelance animator and director before being hired by Post Effects in Chicago, where he was introduced to computer animation. Johnson later joined Pacific Data Images, and formed their Character Animation Group. He worked as an animation director on The Simpsons 1995 Halloween special, Homer3.
He'd come up with the idea for a computer-animated film about bugs in 1991 and finally brought the idea to fruition when he made his feature film directorial debut with Antz (1998), starring the voices of Woody Allen, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone and Christopher Walken, to name a few. The film was a box office smash and won an ASCAP Award for Top Box Office Film.
His second film was Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003), starring the voices of Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Over the Hedge (2006), with the voices of Bruce Willis and Steve Carell followed.
