Born in Dublin, Ireland, Barron studied the art of filmmaking under the tutelage of great directors like Richard Donner, Richard Attenborough and Ridley Scott, while working as a camera assistant on the sets of Superman, Superman II, A Bridge Too Far and The Duellist.
Moving away from features, he started to experiment with different aspects of film, and became a pioneer of the music video.
He worked with various artists including The Jam, Sham 69, and Human League.
In 1982, he directed the award-winning "Billie Jean" video for Michael Jackson, followed by awards for "Money for Nothing" by the Dire Straits and "Take on Me" by Aha.
Barron has also had a fruitful career in commercials, winning awards for his first attempt with Saatchi, and continuing his efforts for products like Ford, Coke, and Renault.
His first feature, Electronic Dreams, was released in 30 countries and won the Madrid Film Festival's Best Director Award.
Three years later, he went to work on Jim Henson's television project, Storyteller. After directing the pilot, which won him an Emmy, he went on to direct two more episodes.
He also won a Canadian Gemini award for Best Animation Series, Reboot.
His next four projects were received warmly by both critics and viewers. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became an overnight success, while Coneheads and The Adventures of Pinocchio also had strong showings at the box office.
The television film, Merlin starring Sam Neill, garnered Barron an Emmy nomination and a Directors Guild Award nomination, and won him a Gold Award from the Worldfest Flagstaff.
The telefilm was so popular that it went to video, being bought and sold in video stores everywhere.
