Stephen Daldry attended the University of Sheffield in England and made his directing debut with the play, II Circo di Nando Orfei. From 1989 to 1992 he was responsible for the artistic direction of the Notting Hill theatre, which received several honors under his guidance. He then became the artistic director/conductor of the Royal Court Theatre.

Daldry has produced over 100 new plays, many of which have been seen all over the world, including Via Dolorosa, Rat in the Skull, The Kitchen, and Search and Destroy.

In 1993 he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Director for the play An Inspector Calls. The play traveled internationally, spent 18 months on Broadway and gathered more awards than any other in history.

Daldry has also directed and produced for BBC Radio and Television. His first short film titled Eight (1998) was nominated for a BAFTA award.

While remaining the director of the Royal Court's redevelopment program, Daldry directed his first feature film. Billy Elliot (2000) is the story of a boy from a working class family in England who excels at ballet, while his father expects him to work at boxing.

For his work on the film, Daldry received his first Oscar nomination. His second film, The Hours (2002), earned him a second Oscar nomination as Best Director. In 2009 he made it three for three when he received his third Academy Award nomination for The Reader (2008).
