Born in New York City to an American father and an English mother, Sienna Miller moved to England with her mother, actress Jo Miller, after her parents divorced. While her mother ran London's Lee Strasberg drama school, Sienna attended Heathfield School in Berkshire, where her classmates remember her as a "wild child" who would go off in the woods to sneak a smoke and who kept frequent company with boys from nearby boarding schools.
She returned to NYC to study at the Lee Strasberg New York drama school and made her off-Broadway debut in 2001 with a production of Independence at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Back in England, her film debut was in the independent feature Joy-Rider (2002), followed by a guest appearance on the short-lived Fox series The American Embassy (filmed in London), but her biggest break was procuring a regular role on the BBC series Bedtime.
Early in 2003, Miller was playing Fiona Bickerton on Paramount's 13-episode TV series Keen Eddie, about a New York cop assigned to a British police precinct. The role earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination as Choice Female TV Breakout Star. Not long after, she acquired roles in two movies. Her part in Layer Cake (2004) took only five days in June to shoot, but it was her participation in Alfie (2004), which began shooting in September 2003, that brought her the most attention she'd had to date. Sienna and the star of the film, Jude Law, hit it off and immediately began dating. They were already an item when he began promoting Cold Mountain (2003), and everyone wanted to know who she was.
She has since graced the cover of numerous magazines and found herself being trailed by paparazzi. "I'm not very happy about it, to be honest," she told an interviewer. "It makes me uncomfortable because I don't think it's as a result of having a film come out, I think it's as a result of being scrutinized because of the relationship I'm in."
They were engaged on Christmas day 2004, but Miller broke it off in July 2005 when she discovered that Law had cheated with his children's nanny a few months earlier.
Miller, who continues to make her home in London, has since filmed roles in Casanova (2005) with Heath Ledger, Factory Girl (2007) with Hayden Christensen, Stardust (2007) with Robert DeNiro, and Foxcatcher (2014). She played the wife of sniper Chris Kyle in the Oscar-winning film American Sniper (2014).
In 2015, she starred in Mississippi Grind (2015), alongside Ryan Reynolds, High-Rise (2015), starring Tom Hiddleston, and Burnt (2015), alongside Bradley Cooper. She then starred in the Ben Affleck crime drama Live by Night (2017) and the action adventure flick The Lost City of Z (2017) starring Tom Holland and Charlie Hunnam.
More recently, she starred in the drama American Woman (2019) and in the crime thriller 21 Bridges (2019) alongside Chadwick Boseman.
Sienna and actor Tom Sturridge have a daughter together—Marlowe, born in 2012—but their relationship has since ended.
