Born in Sweden, Ruben Östlund is best known for his offbeat, satirical films, which are popular with critics. Three of his films have won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including winning the Palm d'Or twice, for The Square (2017) and Triangle of Sadness (2022).
Östlund, who worked in ski resorts in the Alps, was accepted to a film school in Gothenberg, based on skiing films that he'd made mostly for friends.
In 2023, he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Director for Triangle of Sadness (2022).
Östlund has twin daughters from his first marriage to director Andrea Östlund. They divorced in 2008 and he also has a son from his current relationship with Sina Görcz.
