Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Robert Schwentke acquired a degree in Philosophy at the Karls-University in Tuebingen before moving to the United States to study at Columbia College and later at the American Film Institute. He wrote and directed for German TV before writing and directing his first feature film, Tattoo (2002), which won a Special Mention at Fantasporto as well as Special Mention at the Swedish Fantastic Film Festival.
