Born in Toronto, Ontario, Robert Iscove started out as a choreographer. He studied dance at Juilliard and began as an assistant to the late Broadway director/choreographer Michael Bennett. Iscove made his film debut as the choreographer on fellow Canadian Norman Jewison's musical feature Jesus Christ Superstar (1973).
