RJ Cyler was born in Jacksonville, Florida. The youngest of three boys, he taught himself to play drums and keyboard at an early age. He also formed a dance group with one of his brothers.
In 2012, RJ traveled to California to take part in acting camp. He enjoyed the experience so much that he convinced his family to relocate to Los Angeles.
Soon after, he landed an agent and in 2014, was cast in the indie movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015), which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
RJ later landed a role in the HBO series Vice Principals. In 2017 he starred as Billy Cranston / The Blue Ranger in the film Power Rangers (2017) with Elizabeth Banks and in the Netflix TV movie Sierra Burgess is a Loser (2018), he played the best friend of the title character. Most recently he appeared in the film White Boy Rick(2018) alongside Matthew McConaughey.
