Reggie Rock Bythewood has done it all, from acting to writing to producing and directing. Born in the Bronx, he started out in showbusiness with a role in a film called Fight for Your Life (1977). His first regular acting gig came when he was hired to portray teenager R.J. Morgan on the NBC daytime soap, Another World from 1981 to 1983. He left the series when he landed the part of Rickey in the feature film The Brother From Another Planet (1984). Roles in several more films convinced Bythewood that he wanted to try his hand at writing.
In 1987, he landed a job writing scripts for The Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, starring Lisa Bonet. While there, he met his future wife, fellow writer Gina Prince. More writing jobs followed, including penning the screenplay for Spike Lee's Get on the Bus (1996).
In 2000, Bythewood made the leap to directing his own screenplay, Dancing in September. Initially screened at Sundance, the movie was bought by HBO, and Bythewood's next goal was to direct and write a feature film for wide release in theaters. His vision came true with Biker Boyz (2003), starring Laurence Fishburne and produced by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Bythewood and his wife, Gina, have one child.
