Rachel Blanchard was born in Toronto, where she attended high school at Havergal College. She then went to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, before dropping out after auditioning successfully for the role of Cher Horowitz in the Clueless television series. In order to prepare for the role, she went to Los Angeles to spend time in high schools and get a feel for the teen culture there.
Blanchard got her acting start early, being offered a part in a McDonald's commercial as a young child. She also co-starred in the popular Canadian series The Kids of Degrassi Street. This led to many other television roles including The Littlest Hobo, War of the Worlds, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, 7th Heaven, The Peep Show and Flight of the Conchords. Her feature film break was with The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), which led to her appearance in popular films such as Road Trip (2000), Sugar & Spice (2001) and Snakes on a Plane (2006). She also appeared in Maroon 5's music video for their song "Sunday Morning."
Once, an extra was picked out from the set of one of Blanchard's projects to play her father in a brief scene. After shooting the scene, the director looked over to where her actual father was standing and said, "We should have gotten you to play her father, you look perfect for the part," not realizing who he was. Blanchard plays hockey in her spare time and enjoys rock climbing. She is a vegetarian. She is married to Adrian Brown, whom she met in England while filming The Peep Show. They have a daughter named Katie.
