Hailing from Haverford, Pennsylvania, after attending the Berklee College of Music, Hastings graduated from the Musician's Institute in Los Angeles as the Fender Outstanding Bass Player of the Year in 1985. After school, he joined the famed improvisational group The Groundlings in Hollywood where he wrote and performed sketch comedy for four years.
His experience with The Groundlings led him to various gigs ranging from acting roles and a string of national commercials before he landed several writing jobs, including positions at Nickelodeon and other studios.
By the early '90s, he was hired by Warner Bros., where he first wrote and produced episodes of popular animated series such as Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. Hastings won three Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for Animaniacs and garnered his fourth Emmy as producer and writer of the primetime spin-off Pinky and the Brain.
Success led to writing additional telefilms, producing, and composing for various series and videos. By the late '90s, Hastings created and helmed the Disney series One Saturday Morning, and by 2002 he was able to add feature film director to his lengthy résumé with The Country Bears (2002) hitting theaters.
