Penelope Ann Miller is the daughter of Mark Miller, a writer/filmmaker/actor who is best known for his role as the dad in the 1960's sitcom Please Don't Eat The Daisies (1965). Her older sister is actor Marisa Miller.
If you ever wondered where the scar on Penelope's right cheek came from, it happened in a car accident at age 15 while on a ski trip with her family. (Don't worry, it's not that noticeable!)
Born in Los Angeles, Penelope headed to New York to study theater right after high school graduation. Her big debut was on Broadway in 1985 alongside Matthew Broderick in Neil Simon's Tony award-winning play Biloxi Blues in 1985. Just three years later, Penelope was nominated for a Tony Award for her character as "Emily" in Great Performances: Our Town alongside Eric Stoltz and Spalding Gray. That same year, she recreated her Biloxi Blues role in the movie of the same name opposite her Broadway co-star Broderick.
Having dabbled in television since 1985, Penelope made the switch to film and over the years, she has worked with some of the most prestigious actors and directors in Hollywood, including Marlon Brando in The Freshman (1990); Robert Downey Jr. in Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992); Al Pacino in Carlito's Way (1993), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination; and Morgan Freeman in Along Came a Spider (2001). In 2011, she played a role in the Golden Globe-winning motion picture The Artist. She then starred in Saving Lincoln (2013), The Birth of a Nation (2016), and The Bronx Bull (2016).
She has also starred in several television series, including The Closer (1998), A Minute with Stan Hooper (2003 - 2004), Vanished (2006), Men of a Certain Age (2009 - 2011), Mistresses, and more recently, American Crime. In 2018, she made guest appearances on the popular series Riverdale and Criminal Minds. She also played a starring role as Caroline DeVere in Lifetime's TV movie The College Admissions Scandal (2019), which was based on true events.
Penelope, who was previously married to actor Will Arnett, has two children, Aloisa May Huggins and Maria Adela Huggins with her husband, actor James Patrick Huggins.
