Born Dante Terrell Smith in Brooklyn New York, Mos Def began acting professionally onscreen at the age of 14 in the ABC-TV movie God Bless the Child (1988). By the time he was 16, Def was a regular on the CBS sitcom You Take the Kids, playing Nell Carter's oldest son. He made his feature film debut in The Hard Way (1991), a comedy starring Michael J.
