Born and raised in San Francisco, Sokoloff is the daughter of a doctor, and a caterer, who later decided to manage her daughter's career. Marla moved to Los Angeles in 1994 and enrolled in the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, where she studied theater and music. There she won numerous awards and accolades for her singing, performing the national anthem at such high profile events as the Oakland A's baseball games.

Soon after moving to Los Angeles, Marla began landing roles on several popular television series including Home Improvement, Party of Five, 3rd Rock From the Sun and 7th Heaven. In 1997, she landed one of her best known roles as Lucy Hatcher, on the award winning series, The Practice.

As well, she's been seen between shows on commercials for Golden Grams and McDonalds. Sokoloff has also appeared in the Goo Goo Dolls music video "Name".

On the big screen, she appears in the films The Baby-Sitters Club (1995), True Crime (1995), Whatever It Takes (2000) and Sugar and Spice (2001).

In her off time, Sokoloff collects guitars and writes music.
