Born: May 02, 1987
Mae Martin was born to a British father and a Canadian mother in Toronto, Ontario. Although they lived in Greece for a number of years, Martin was mostly raised in Toronto, where at age 11, she was taken to see a show at Second City. She was enthralled and immediately began taking comedy classes there, making her stage debut as a stand up at age 13.
By then, she'd also discovered a love of drugs, and stopped attending classes at her all girls school to pursue a career in comedy at Second City. Her parents didn't know how to handle her, so they kicked the teen out of the house by the time she was 16. She ended up living with a man who was twice her age, who sexually abused her.
At 19, Martin went to rehab, then in 2011, she left to live in London, England. She presented her one-person show, Mae Martin: Us, at the Edinborough Fringe Festival.
Martin created, wrote and starred in the biographical comedy series Feel Good for the British network Channel 4 in 2020, just before the pandemic hit. The second season was filmed during the pandemic and aired in 2021. In 2021 she appeared alongside comedians such as Colin Mochrie and Tom Green on the Prime Video comedy series LOL: Last One Laughing Canada. Her 2023 standup comedy special, Mae Martin: SAP is available on Netflix, as is her 2025 series, Wayward.
Wayward, created by and starring Martin, was screened at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival before debuting on Netflix. It's about a police detective named Alex Dempsey (Martin) who is married to a woman named Laura (Sarah Gadon). When a teenage boy runs away from the local boarding school for troubled kids, Alex starts looking into it.
