Paul Mackenzie Crook was born in Maidstone, England, then raised in Dartford. As a small boy, he underwent growth therapy to conquer a genetic hormone deficiency. From a young age, he had a passion for the arts, so much so that he tried three times to get acceptance to Kent Institute of Art and Design. When he received his third rejection, Mackenzie was encouraged to join a local theater. There, he fell in love with comedy sketches and began to write a few of his own. The theater manager quickly spotted his potential.
Working part time in the food industry to pay the bills, it was not long before Mackenzie was recognized for his comedic abilities. He made his film debut in 1996 in The Man Who Fell in Love with a Traffic Cone!.
Soon after, he made a series of television appearances, including a stint on the 11 o’clock Show as a standup comedian.
However, his big break came in 2001 when he landed the role of Gareth Keenan on the hit BBC TV series The Office. His character sported an embarrassing haircut and had a meaningless job title that audiences loved. After that, he shared the screen with Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice, the late Heath Ledger in The Brothers Grimm and Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland. It was Mackenzie's lasting impression on Depp that secured his role as pirate Ragetti in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Mackenzie joined the cast of the hit series Game of Thrones in 2013, playing Orell. He also plays Rudy Lom on Almost Human and Andy on the TV series Detectorists.
He married his wife Lindsay in 2001 and together they have a son, Jude Michael (born in 2003) and a daughter, Scout Elizabeth (born in 2007).
