Laura Vandervoort was born in Toronto, Ontario. She began acting at the age of 14 in commercials before landing her first role in the kids series Goosebumps.
Laura took acting classes to polish her acting skills and began booking guest roles on Toronto-based TV series such as Doc starring Billy Ray Cyrus and Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, as well as a starring role on the Disney Channel movie Mom's Got A Date With A Vampire.
She then completed her education at York University where she majored in Psychology and English. In 2004 she landed a starring role as Sadie Harrison on the CTV TV series Instant Star, which ran for four seasons.
In 2006, Laura got her first feature film role in The Lookout starring Jeff Daniels, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Matthew Goode and Isla Fisher. Soon after, Laura landed a major role on CW's hot show Smallville playing the role of Supergirl aka Kara.
Laura followed her small screen role by booking another feature film. She starred in Into the Blue 2: The Reef (2009). She also worked on the sci-fi TV series V alongside Elizabeth Mitchell and Scott Wolf.
Laura has since appeared in The Entitled, This Means War (2012) with Reese Witherspoon and in Ted (2012) starring Mark Wahlberg.
Laura stars in the TV series Bitten which airs on Space Channel. She will also be seen as the supervillain Indigo on the CW series Supergirl.
In 2017, she starred in the horror film Jigsaw (2017) and returned to another horror/thriller in 2020 titled Rabid.
Laura, who was always drawn to sports, has a second degree black belt in karate. Growing up, she was part of several teams including basketball, soccer and tennis.
