Kurt Wimmer graduated from the University of South Florida in 1987 with a BFA in Art History. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he had the opportunity to collaborate in writing films such as The Thomas Crowne Affair (1999) and The Recruit (2003).
He made his directorial debut in 1995 with the violent thriller One Tough Bastard. Unfortunately, the film went straight to video. Equilibrium (2002), starring Christian Bale, which Wimmer wrote and directed himself, made it to theaters, but critics were tough on the film and it quickly disappeared. Wimmer thought he would never get a chance to direct again, but the sci-fi thriller gained a solid fan base after being released on DVD.
Wimmer went on to write and direct another sci-fi thriller, Ultraviolet (2006), starring Milla Jovovich.
Married, Wimmer calls his wife his "muse, catalyst and inspiration."
