Born in Exton, Pennsylvania, Smith was a competitive teen who excelled at skiing, basketball and school politics. During school he played a supporting character in The King and I. After high school he followed his father's advice and took business administration at the University of Vermont. Using his undergraduate degree to work with his father, he discovered his love for acting through presentations he made to clients.
Having already taken a small step towards an acting career with a bit part in a Baywatch episode, Smith worked quickly, landing a small role in 12 Monkeys, followed by commercial work.
Selling his car and moving to New York in 1997, Smith found work playing Ryder Hughes in the soap opera, As the World Turns. The work lead him to the hit teen show, Dawson's Creek, where he played the role of Jack McPhee. For the next few years he continued to work on this show.
While not on the set of Dawson's Creek, Smith landed gigs with small budget feature films like Kiss & Tell. By the new millennium, he had garnered bigger roles in major films like Final Destination (2000) and The Forsaken (2001).
A self-taught musician, Smith plays both piano and bass. He also is an aspiring writer, working on both music scores and screenplays.
