Born in Spring Valley, New York, Julianna Margulies studied at the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College where she gravitated towards the drama department in order to escape the elitist attitudes of her classmates. After graduation, Margulies moved to Florida where she appeared in local theater productions when she wasn't tending bar. She appeared for a short time on the television series Law and Order before making a somewhat meager film debut in Out for Justice, a Steven Seagal feature in which she played a reformed prostitute. "It's the only thing a woman can be in a Steven Seagal movie," she says.
Margulies is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Carol Hathaway in the smash hit television series E.R. In the pilot episode, Hathaway was scheduled to die from an overdose after being left at the altar, but Margulies tested so well with television audiences that the character was revived in the E.R. After the first season, Margulies was the only E.R. cast member to receive—and win—an Emmy nomination. Good thing she wasn't D.O.A.
Since then she has received five more Emmy nominations for the series. She's also earned 12 Golden Globe nominations over the course of her career so far, including a win in 2010, for her starring role in the drama series The Good Wife. Since the show ended, she has starred in the 2018 AMC TV series Dietland and is currently filming the mini-series The Hot Zone for the National Geographic Channel.
She made the leap to feature film stardom with a lead role in the major motion picture Ghost Ship (2002) followed by a supporting role in Snakes on a Plane (2006) starring Samuel L. Jackson. Most recently she played a role opposite Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston in the comedy/drama The Upside (2019).
