Julia Garner was born in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Her family includes her mother, Tami Gingold, a therapist and comedian, her father, Thomas Garner, a painter and an art teacher, and her older sister, Anna (Ani), who is a writer, producer and an artist.
In an effort to overcome her shyness, Julia began taking acting lessons at the age of 15, just two years before she would land her feature film debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene(2011). That led to roles in films such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).
Her first starring role was in the role of a Mormon fundamentalist who believes she's gotten pregnant by listening to rock music in the 2012 movie, Electrick Children, for which she won Best Actress at the 2012 Bombay International Film Festival. The following year, she played the lead in the American remake of the Mexican horror film We Are What We Are and won Best Actress at the Austin Fantastic Fest.
She went on to star opposite Lily Tomlin in Grandma (2015). On TV, Julia has appeared as Kimberly Breland on several episodes of the television series The Americans (2013 - 2015) and plays the role of Ruth Langmore on the Netflix original series Ozark (2017 - 2019).
In 2019, Julia received nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association not only for her supporting role on Ozark, but for her supporting role as Terra Newell on the TV series Dirty John (2018 - 2019). In 2019 and in 2020, she took home Primetime Emmy awards for her work on Ozark.
She then starred in the TV series Modern Love (2019) for Amazon Studios followed by a starring role in The Assistant (2020).
Julia has been a fan of Bette Davis since the age of 10, when she saw her horror/thriller film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?(1962).
Through her grandparents, Julia has dual American/German citizenship.
