While spending his summer in Hollywood visiting his older brother Caleb, Joel Courtney decided to take a few acting classes and maybe audition for a commercial or two before returning home to Idaho. Instead of returning to school that fall he wound up starting production on his first feature film in the starring role, and not just any film, but one produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by J.J. Abrams: Super 8 (2011), which went on to capture the top spot at the box office on its opening weekend.
A few years later, he played the famous character, Tom Sawyer, in the feature Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn (2014), alongside Disney star Jake T. Austin. After playing a regular role on the CW series The Messengers in 2015, he went on to play a starring role in the Netflix romantic comedy The Kissing Booth (2018). He reprised his role as Lee Flynn in the sequel, The Kissing Booth 2 (2020).
In his free time Joel enjoys playing basketball, lacrosse, running cross country, and he has been a competitive swimmer since the age of four.
