Originally acclaimed as a stage actress, Plowright was born in Brigg, England, and trained at the renowned Old Vic Theatre School. Though they were both married when they co-starred together in 1960's The Entertainer, she married acting legend Sir Laurence Olivier in 1961 and remained his wife until his death in 1989. They had three children together.

In 1993 she won two Golden Globes: one for her role in the motion picture Enchanted April, and one for the TV movie Stalin. In 17970 she was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and appointed a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) in the 2004 New Year's Honors List, for services to drama. In 2003 she won an Angel Award for Best Actress in I Am David (2003) at the Monaco Film Festival.
