Born: April 30, 1952
Jacques Audiard was born in Paris, France to Marie-Christine Guibert and film director and screenwriter Michel Audiard.
Jacques’ directorial debut came with the film See How They Fall (1994), a road movie about a sales representative who tries to track down the people who shot his friend Mickey. The film won the César Award, which is the national film award of France.
He gained international recognition for his second film, A Self-Made Hero (1996), a film presented in the style of a historical documentary, with an elderly protagonist narrating the events of his life. Jacques won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival and received six César Awards.
In 2009, he directed A Prophet (2009) and won the Grand Prix at Cannes, as well as a BAFTA award for Best Film not in the English Language. In 2012, Rust and Bone (2012) starring Marion Cotillard, was nominated for the Palm d’Or at Cannes and a BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
In 2015, his film Dheepan won the Palm d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for Best Film not in the English Language at the BAFTAs.
Jacques’ international reputation increased even further with his film Emilia Pérez (2024), which starred Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. The film premiered at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palm d’Or and won the Jury Prize. Its female ensemble cast also shared the win for Best Actress.
The film was chosen to be France’s representative for the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, in which it received a nomination. Jacques also received three Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
