The son of Jewish immigrants who moved to the United States in 1939 to avoid the Holocaust, Henry Winkler was born in Manhattan. His first acting role was playing a tube of toothpaste in a kindergarten play, but by eighth grade, he earned the title role in the school play Billy Budd and was bitten by the acting bug for good.
