Born: October 28, 1978

Born in Worthing, West Sussex, England, Gwendoline Christie was a promising gymnast before a career-ending back injury led her to acting. She trained at Drama Centre London, graduating in 2005. Early in her career she was warned that her height (6’3”) may hold her back from landing roles.

Gwendoline began her stage career in productions like Cymbeline, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Doctor Faustus. Her screen debut came in the film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), followed by roles in short films and Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem (2013).

Her breakout role arrived through HBO’s fan favorite TV series Game of Thrones (2012-2019), on which she played Brienne of Tarth. From this role she earned a Primetime Emmy nomination as well as five SAG Ensemble recognitions for the role. Gwendoline then portrayed Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and starred as a supporting role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015) as Commander Lyme.

Additionally, she played Constable Miranda in the TV series Top of the Lake: China Girl (2017) and in 2022 she joined the cast of the Netflix hit The Sandman as Lucifer. She was also in Principal Larissa Weems in Tim Burton's Wednesday (2022-present), which has been named one of Netflix’s most-watched series.

When she is not acting, Gwendoline models for big names such as Vivenne Westwood, Miu Miu, and Maison Margiela and is an advocate for diversity in casting and fashion. ~Erin Grace
