Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, Guy Ferland grew up in New Hampshire. After seeing Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious (1946) at the age of 13, he decided that he wanted to be a filmmaker. Ferland went on to study cinema production at the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television, where he received an internship with Creative Artists Agency, working as a researcher. Three days after earning his Bachelor of Arts in 1988 he landed a job as director Joel Schumacher's assistant. Ferland assisted him on the films Flatliners (1990) and Falling Down (1993) and received an associate producer credit on The Client (1994).

In 1995 Ferland wrote and directed his first film, The Babysitter, starring Alicia Silverstone. His next directorial effort, Telling Lies In America (1997) starring Kevin Bacon, Brad Renfro and Calista Flockhart, received the National Board of Review's Excellence in Filmmaking Award. Ferland made his television-directing debut with the ABC TV movie Our Guys: Outrage at Glen Hill (1999) starring Ally Sheedy and Eric Stoltz, then directed for the hit series Ed before returning to the big screen with After The Storm (2001), which won Best Feature Film at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, as well as Best Feature Film at the Angelciti Film Festival in Los Angeles. Returning to television, he directed several episodes of the FX series The Shield.

Ferland won a Daytime Emmy award as well as a Directors Guild of America award for "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children's Programs" for directing the award-winning Showtime movie Bang Bang, You're Dead (2002), starring Tom Cavanaugh and Ben Foster. Ferland next flew to Puerto Rico to direct the major motion picture Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004) for Miramax Films.
