Born in Tehran, Iran, Golshifteh Farahani is the daughter of theater director/actor Behzad Farahani. Her first stage role came at the age of six and her film debut followed at 14 in the Iranian film The Pear Tree a.k.a. Derakhte Golabi (1998). When Golshifteh won the Best Actress prize at the Fajr Film Festival, she immediately became a star in her native country.
It was the first of many awards for the young actress, who went on to win Best Actress at the Nantes Three Continents Festival for her work in the Iranian film Boutique (2004); Best Actress in 2012 for her performance "carrying the story" of Syngué sabour, pierre de patience (2012), followed by a Special Festival Award for Outstanding Performance at the 2014 Stony Brook Film Festival for her work in My Sweet Pepper Land (2013).
More recently, Golshifteh has begun to appear in American films, such as Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and The Upside (2019), starring Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart. She also recently appeared in the French film, Girls of the Sun/Les filles du soleil (2019).
Golshifteh married first husband, producer/assistant director Amin Mahdavi in 2003, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2013. She married second husband Christos Dorje Walker in 2015, but that marriage also ended in divorce just two years later.
Having appeared nude on the cover of a French magazine in 2012 and topless in a short French promotional film for the César awards, she is officially no longer welcome to return to her native country. At the time of the incident, she was based in Paris.
