Multilingual Spanish actress Elsa Pataky was born in Madrid to parents Jose and Cristina. Originally Elsa LaFuente Medianu, Elsa decided to take her mother's maiden name "Pataky" when she became an actress. She is of Spanish, Romanian and Hungarian ancestry.
Elsa first took acting classes while studying journalism at CEU San Pablo University. She then became a member of the Madrid theater company Teatro Cámara de Ángel Gutiérrez while still in university. However, she left school when she was cast in the Spanish television series Al salir de clase (1997).
She made her first feature film appearance in the Spanish horror drama The Art of Dying (2000).
Much of her early career was spent on television, including recurring roles in the American fantasy series Queen of Swords (2000) and the Spanish comedy series Los Serrano (2003). Next she appeared in the French comic series Iznogoud (2004).
Elsa has also co-starred in many little-known independent films over her career, such as Give 'Em Hell, Malone (2009) alongside Thomas Jane, Giallo (2009) alongside Adrien Brody and Di Di Hollywood (2010), her first solo leading role in a film.
The actress got her biggest movie role to date in 2011, as Officer Elena Neves in Fast Five, a role which she would reprise in both Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and Furious 7 (2015).
In 2017, she voiced a part in the animated adventure comedy Ozzy and stepped back into the role of Elena in The Fate of the Furious alongside Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Charlize Theron. She more recently starred in 12 Strong (2018) opposite her husband, Chris Hemsworth.
Elsa was formerly in a relationship with actor Adrien Brody, however, that ended in 2009. As previously mentioned, she is now married to actor Chris Hemsworth, with whom she has three children.
