Born in New Jersey, Decter studied film and English at Wesleyan University. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1981 after winning a filmmaking grant from the American Film Institute. Making his initial mark directing commercials and music videos, Decter met future business partner, John Strauss, during an industry softball league in Los Angeles.
