David S. Goyer Biography

As a boy growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, David Goyer remembers getting hooked on the TV series Dark Shadows when he was in kindergarten. He would watch it with his babysitter after school and claims it inspired him to start writing. But by the time he was in high school, he'd decided to attend Michigan State University in order to become a homicide investigator. However, his teachers sensed David would be happier in a more creative field, and convinced him to enroll in the University of Southern California's film program.

He sold his first screenplay, the Jean Claude Van Damme thriller Death Warrant, just before graduating in 1988. Goyer went on to write several more Hollywood action pics, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), Blade (1998) and Dark City (1998), for which he won a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In 2002, Goyer made his directing debut with his screenplay, ZigZag, based on the novel by Landon J. Napoleon, about an autistic teenager nicknamed ZigZag because of his ability to get out of trouble. Wesley Snipes, who starred in the Blade films, agreed to take on a role in the film, and his involvement helped Goyer get financing. Then, because Blade II (2002) was an even bigger hit than the original, Goyer wrote a third Blade screenplay. This time, he decided to direct the film himself, as well as produce. Again starring Snipes, Blade: Trinity was released in 2004.

Goyer has since written the screenplay for Batman Begins (2005) and has signed on as an executive producer for Ghost Rider (2006), starring Nicolas Cage.

When he gets time off, Goyer enjoys traveling to out-of-the-way places like Tibet, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Burma and Thailand.
