Dan Algrant studied filmmaking at Columbia University, where one of his instructors was Martin Scorsese. Algrant wrote and directed several short films while at school, and Scorsese was so impressed by his work that he told Algrant that if he wanted to write a full-length screenplay, he would serve as executive producer. The result was Naked in New York (1994), a semi-autobiographical comedy about a fledgling playwright. Scorsese’s involvement ensured a high profile cast that included Eric Stoltz, Mary-Louise Parker, Tony Curtis, Kathleen Turner, Timothy Dalton, Jill Clayburgh, Whoopi Goldberg, Calista Flockhart and Ralph Macchio.
The film premiered at Sundance in 1994, and went on to win the Audience Award at the Deauville Film Festival. Algrant next directed several episodes of the sitcom Sex in the City before returning to film directing with People I Know (2003). Once again, Algrant had the fortune to work with an all-star cast, including Al Pacino, Kim Basinger, Téa Leoni, Ryan O’Neal and Robert Klein.
