Born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, Hoskins dropped out of school at 15 and began a 10-year search to find himself. Some of his jobs included chimney sweep, circus fire-eater and fruit picker on an Israeli kibbutz before he began training to become an accountant. Hated that. So he turned to paying the bills whatever way he could until he saw a notice for a theater audition. He showed up and got the part with absolutely no previous experience or training. Suddenly he found himself performing alongside British theater giants in London's Royal Court and National Theatre and a very successful film career followed. In 1987 he won a BAFTA Film Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance in Mona Lisa, as well as receiving an Oscar nomination for the same film. In 1999 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK Empire Awards, and in 2000 he won a Genie for Best Leading Actor in Felicia's Journey.
Bob continued to land film roles but not in many well-known titles, until he landed the part of Muir, one of the dwarves, in the highly-anticipated adaptation, Snow White & the Huntsman (2012).
In 2012 Bob retired from acting after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He passed away on April 29, 2014 after suffering from pneumonia.
Bob is survived by four children: Rosa and Jack with his wife Linda Banwell, to whom he has been married since 1982, and Alex and Sarah with Jane Livesey, whom he divorced in 1978 after 11 years of marriage.
