Billie Lourd was born in Los Angeles, California, as the only child of late actress Carrie Fisher and talent agent Bryan Lourd. She is also the only grandchild of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher.

Billie attended high school at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles and graduated with a self-designed degree in "Art and Business as Religion" from New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2014.

In 2015, Billie made her acting debut alongside her mother in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), as well as the second installment Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) and third Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019). In the third film, Billie played the physical role of Princess Leia, with her mother’s face placed over hers using visual effects. This came after the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016.

Also in 2015, Billie made her television debut, appearing in all 23 episodes of the Fox series Scream Queens as Chanel #3 alongside Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Billie said that her mother tried to sneak into a Comic Con screening of the show to no avail, as she was immediately recognized.

In 2019, Billie played Gigi in the Olivia Wilde high school comedy Booksmart (2019) with Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. Billie was praised for her comedic timing and scene-stealing ability, which earned her the win for Best Supporting Actress at the Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards.

Moving back to television, Billie has established herself as a mainstay in the anthology horror series American Horror Story. She has appeared as a season regular in the show's seventh to eleventh season with a recurring role in the twelfth.
