Austin Butler was born in Anaheim, California, and quickly became involved in the entertainment industry. When he was 13, he was approached by a background-acting management company.
After working in many background roles, he landed a role as Lionel Scranton on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide for two seasons. He continued to guest star on children's programs, such as Hannah Montana, ICarly, and Wizards of Waverly Place. In addition, he played the main love interest on Zoey 101's fourth season from 2007 to 2008.
Austin made his film debut in Aliens in the Attic (2009), alongside Disney star Ashley Tisdale. He continued to work with Tisdale in Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure (2011), a high school musical franchise spin-off.
He continued to work in television, appearing as Wilke on Switched at Birth from 2011 to 2012, then Sebastian Kydd on the Sex and the City spin-off The Carrie Diaries, and Wil Ohmsford on The Shannara Chronicles from 2016 to 2017.
In 2019, he appeared in Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as Manson family member Tex Watson. In 2022 he starred in the Elvis Presley biopic Elvis (2022), for which he won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Film Award. He has also received a Best Actor nomination from the Academy Awards.
Austin taught himself to play guitar at 13 and continues to collect guitars as a hobby.
He was in a long-term relationship with fellow childhood star Vanessa Hudgens from 2011 to 2020. He is currently dating model Kaia Gerber.
