The product of a profoundly unhappy home life, Andie was compelled to make her own way from an early age. The Gaffney, South Carolina, native spent her teenage years working a number of minimum-wage jobs such as McDonalds and Pizza Hut, before dropping out of Winthrop College in order to become an Elite model.
Her innocent, well-scrubbed good looks were not only suited to her job as a cosmetics model, in 1984, they won her the role of Jane Porter in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan.(1984). Andie couldn¹t mask her South Carolina accent, and so Glenn Close voiced the part for her.
Joining the "brat pack" brigade with St. Elmo's Fire (1985), MacDowell just as quickly broke away from it with her riveting performance in Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989). Her role as a dissatisfied housewife earned her a number of accolades, and helped to establish her as a "serious" actress.
MacDowell's likability has enabled her to weather such disasters as Hudson Hawk (1991). In 1994, she earned the title of #1 female box office draw worldwide thanks to her performances in the romantic comedy smash hit Four Weddings and a Funeral and the western Bad Girls.
Part of MacDowell's appeal is her humor, which come through especially well in romantic comedies such as the filmGreen Card (1990), for which MacDowell received her second Golden Globe nomination and the hit comedies, Groundhog Day (1993) and Multiplicity (1996). Most recently, she starred in Magic Mike XXl (2015).
Confirming her international appeal, MacDowell was honored with the coveted Cesar d'Honneur for life's work and the Goldene Kamera Award from Germany's Horzu Publications for career achievement. Both awards were presented to her in 1997.
In 1986 she married Paul Qualley. Although they had three children together, they were divorced in 1999. Andie then married Atlanta jewelry businessman and childhood friend Rhett DeCamp Hartzog in 2001, but that marriage ended in divorce in 2004.
