Alex Borstein is a multi-talented artist with acting, comedy, writing and producing skills. She was born in Highland Park, Illinois to Irv and Judy Borstein. She attended San Francisco State University, where she studied rhetoric.
Alex’s first few roles were in voice-over. She was the voice of a couple of monsters in the hit children’s series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in four episodes from 1993 to 1994.
She trained in improvisational comedy at the ACME Comedy Theater in Los Angeles, where she met her writing partner and future husband, Jackson Douglas. At the time, Alex had been working at an ad agency, but she left her position to become a full-time writer. Together, she and Jackson began working on the animated series The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper and Pinky and the Brain.
In 1996, while still writing for Casper, she returned to Power Rangers in Power Rangers Zeo, voicing one of the main villains, Queen Machina. She voiced the character for 48 episodes.
In 1997, Alex became a cast member on the third season of the sketch comedy show MADtv. She was a mainstay on the show from season three to season seven, which aired in 2001. She made guest appearances during the show’s ninth, 10th, 13th and 14th seasons.
While working on MADtv, Alex met Seth MacFarlane, who was prepping to launch his new animated sitcom, Family Guy. MacFarlane cast Alex as Lois Griffin on the show, which debuted in 1999 and is still going. She has voiced the character for over 420 episodes so far. Her performance has been recognized with an Emmy win for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance in 2018. She has also been nominated four other times for her role.
In addition to acting, Alex has also served as a producer and writer for the show.
On the on-camera front, she has built up an impressive résumé. She started with guest appearances on shows such as 3-South, Frasier, and Friends and in films, including The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003), Bad Santa (2003) and Catwoman (2004).
She also played a small role in the Best Picture nominated film, Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) with George Clooney.
In 2010 Alex started making more prominent appearances in comedic films such as Killers (2010), Ted (2012) and A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014). Also in 2010, she joined the staff of the Showtime dramedy, Shameless. She served as a writer and supervising producer in the first season and stayed on as a writer but moved to a consulting producer in the second season.
Her most prominent on-camera role was on the Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with Rachel Brosnahan. Alex appeared in 43 episodes and garnered critical acclaim. She was a two-time Emmy winner and five-time nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
She still does quite a bit of voice-over work, appearing in a variety of animated series and films such as American Dad, Robot Chicken, The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and The Bad Guys (2022).
In 2025 she will reprise her role of Chief Misty Luggins in The Bad Guys 2.
Alex and Jackson were married in 1999. The two of them had two children together, a son and a daughter. They filed for divorce in October 2014, and it was finalized in 2017.
