ADRIANA BARRAZA

Date of Birth: March 5, 1956

Born and raised in Mexico, Adriana Barraza had never acted in an English language production when she was chosen to play a supporting role in Babel (2006), starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

Playing an illegal immigrant who's the nanny of two American children, Barraza received critical acclaim for her performance, including a San Francisco Film Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

A popular television actress since 1993, Barraza's first Hollywood experience was behind the scenes as an acting coach for the filming of Spanglish (2004), starring Adam Sandler and Paz Vega.

She'd worked with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in Amores Perros (2000), and when he was having difficulty casting the role of Amelia in Babel, his wife recalled Barraza, who then sent an audition tape at his request. He says, "It was so good that I was almost crying. Every scene hit me in the heart and the gut."

The actress' big screen career continued with the release of the drama Cake (2015), which gave her the opportunity to work alongside Jennifer Aniston and Anna Kendrick, as well as the biographical and historical drama The 33 (2015), about the true life story of 33 miners trapped underground in Chili for 69 days.

A few years later, moviegoers saw Adriana join the adventure film Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019), opposite Isabela Moner, Benicio Del Toro and Eva Longoria.

Fans of the horror series The Strain, created by Guillermo del Toro for the FX Network, have also been able to appreciate her work in the role of Guadalupe Elizalde over the course of the first three seasons from 2014 - 2016. She has also played roles on several Mexican series and will appear on the new Showtime series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

After being married to Carlos Valsagna, the father of her daughter, from 1978 to 1985, Adriana married actor Arnaldo Pike in 2005.
